Can I Replace Both Upper and Lower Teeth With Bar Attachment Denture?

Bar Attachment Denture, sometimes called same-day tooth replacement, is a tooth replacement option that offers more flexibility and faster treatment than traditional dental implants. This type of implant is also often an option for those who have lost bone mass and are not good candidates for traditional implants. They can be used for both upper and lower teeth.

How Bar Attachment Denture Works

Traditional dental implants place a single root in the jawbone for each new, prosthetic tooth. For this to be successful, you must have sufficient bone mass in the jaw to support these artificial roots. However, many people, especially those who have worn dentures or who have had teeth missing for some time, lack this necessary bone mass and so are not good candidates for traditional implants.

Bar Attachment Denture instead uses four implants to support multiple prosthetic teeth, often a full arch on either the top or the bottom jaw. The oral surgeon places the implants at an angle so they can be rooted in the area of the jawbone where the bone is the most dense. The prosthetic teeth are then placed on the abutments. The four implants hold the teeth firmly in place until you remove them, such as for cleaning. New teeth can often be placed immediately after your implants, which has led to the term “same-day tooth replacement” as another description of Bar Attachment Denture.

Deciding on Bar Attachment Denture

The main reason for choosing Bar Attachment Denture is because you are not a good candidate for traditional dental implants because of diminished bone mass but do not want to wear dentures. Your dentist, oral surgeon, or implant dentist can help you decide if Bar Attachment Denture is a good option for you.

Some factors to consider when deciding on Bar Attachment Denture implants include:

  • Your overall health
  • Whether you suffer from an immune system disorder
  • Whether you suffer from a systemic illness like diabetes
  • The health of your gums
  • Whether you are undergoing treatment for osteoporosis

These factors can all determine whether or not implant surgery of any kind is a good idea for you. To find out if this is a good tooth replacement option for your personal needs, please contact our office at 703-425-5010 to schedule a consultation.
