Tooth Extraction: Is a Dental Implant in my Future?

dental implants burkeIf you need to have a tooth extracted, you should consider replacing it with a dental implant. Dental implants are the most advanced and most effective form of tooth replacement, helping prevent many of the unpleasant long-term effects of tooth loss.

Why Dental Implants?

With a dental implant, you replace your entire tooth, not just the visible portions you use to bite and chew. The root is also replaced. This is important because the tooth root, embedded in the jawbone, stimulates the bone to continue growing. Without this stimulation, the bone tissue in the jaw will be resorbed, its minerals recycled by the body for use elsewhere.

Dental implants also offer the advantage of being permanent, stationary, and very realistic looking. If you have implants, people are unlikely to notice you have false teeth at all. Implants also remain in one place when you bite and chew, so even if you bite into a crisp apple or a piece of steak, your new teeth won’t shift.

Deciding on Implants

If you have only one missing tooth, implants still provide an excellent solution. It’s very easy to replace just one tooth with an implant, since each individual tooth can have its own tooth root. The root portion is embedded in the jawbone, stimulating it to continue to grow over time. Having the missing tooth replaced also means your other teeth won’t shift around to fill in the missing space.

Most people are candidates for implants, but be sure to talk to an implant dentist about your individual health and how certain issues might make it harder for an implant to heal properly. These can include:

  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Gum disease
  • Bone atrophy

If your implant doesn’t heal properly, it can become loose. Once an implant loosens, it can’t be repaired and must be replaced. Making sure you’re in excellent health and free of any problems or conditions that could slow your healing is the best way to ensure your dental implant procedure with be a success.
