Single tooth replacement: What are my options?

If you have a single missing tooth, you have a variety of options for tooth replacement. These include traditional options like partial dentures as well as dental implants. You and your dentist can determine the best option for your individual situation.

Options for Tooth Replacement

Tooth replacement options have changed over time, adapting to new technology and becoming more and more lifelike and comfortable. Even some older techniques, like dentures, have evolved and improved over time. Today’s dentures are lighter and less bulky, making them easier to wear. Partial dentures can replace a single tooth, attached to wires and a partial palate.

Bridges are also commonly used in single tooth replacement. The new tooth can be anchored with wires or with crowns placed on the adjacent teeth. Adjacent teeth must be altered to make room for the wires or for the crowns that hold the new tooth secure. If you would prefer not to have adjacent teeth involved in your tooth replacement, dental implants might be a better choice.

Tooth Replacement and Dental Implants

The most effective form of tooth replacement today is dental implants. Implants are placed with oral surgery and have both a new root and a crown. This allows them to look and feel natural. You can eat and chew any foods, including crisp or chewy items, without worrying about dislodging your teeth, in contrast to dentures, which can be shifted out of position. Implants also help prevent jawbone atrophy by stimulating the bone to grow.

In proper healing, the jawbone bonds to the titanium in the implant. If this process does not take place, the implant fails. It’s important, then, to ensure you have no existing issues that could affect this process. This could include:
