Dentures are the tried-and-true method for replacing entire arches of lost teeth because they simultaneously restore your smile’s appearance and functionality. However, they are infamous for slipping out of place or not fitting correctly, which can lead to painful sores or embarrassing moments.

Thankfully, your dentist can provide a more permanent solution with All-on-4 dental implants, which involves surgically embedding four titanium rods in your jawbone to anchor your restoration. Continue reading to learn about 3 commonly asked questions regarding what to expect when recovering from this procedure!

Question #1: How Much Pain Is Normal After My Procedure?

You’ll be numbed and likely sedated for the surgery itself, so you won’t have to worry about any discomfort until the meds wear off. Then, because this treatment involves placing multiple implants directly into your jaw, it’s normal to experience some swelling and aching afterward. Applying an ice pack to the affected areas in the first 48 hours following your appointment can reduce associated pain and inflammation.

If you’ve been given prescription pain meds, you must take them exactly as directed to avoid potential adverse effects. Usually, it’s also safe to take over-the-counter drugs like Tylenol or ibuprofen to address symptoms.

Question #2: How Can I Keep My Mouth Clean After My Surgery?

Usually, it’s best not to rinse with water on the first day after your treatment, though you may use a medicated rinse if your provider recommends it. After that, it’s recommended that you gently swish warm salt water around your mouth three times daily to disinfect and wash away unwanted debris naturally.

When you feel ready, you can resume gently scrubbing your teeth twice daily with a soft-bristled brush and non-abrasive toothpaste to avoid triggering any sensation in your gums. Also, try not to touch your new teeth with your fingers because you can introduce additional germs that contribute to infection.

Question #3: When Can I Resume My Usual Routine?

It can take anywhere from three to six months to completely heal from your All-on-4 procedure because that’s how long it typically takes your jaw to produce enough new bone growth to fuse with the titanium rods of your restoration. However, many patients are able to resume their normal routine a few days after their surgery because their new restoration is placed immediately, which speeds up the healing process.

If you experience fatigue, limited mobility, or pain that persists or doesn’t subside after about a week, contact your provider immediately so they can examine your mouth to ensure you’re healing as intended!
