Since the 1980s, BOTOX has become well known as one of the safest, fastest, and most effective ways to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in the face. In fact, it’s become so reliable it is now widely trusted for use in the treatment of a variety of medical conditions, too. Although side-effects from BOTOX injections are incredibly rare, on occasion, patients may experience some minor adverse effects. Here’s a closer look at them, and why BOTOX truly is one of the safest ways to smooth facial wrinkles!

What is BOTOX?

BOTOX is an injectable cosmetic product made from botulinum toxin type A, which is derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, that in extremely small doses it is very safe when injected into the skin.

BOTOX works by blocking signals from the nerve endings to the muscles, temporarily disabling their movement. This in turn can be used to prevent things like dynamic wrinkles from forming in the face.

Are There Side Effects With BOTOX?

As with any type of injection, there is always a chance of side effects with BOTOX. However, these are extremely rare. In fact, between 1989 and 2003, the FDA only received 36 reports of adverse reactions from it, most of which were attributed to the underlying medical conditions of the patients who suffered the effects and not the BOTOX itself!

After receiving your BOTOX injections, please note that it is very common to experience temporary side effects at the site, including bruising and bleeding, inflammation, minor pain, tenderness, and swelling. These are not usually cause for alarm and can typically be alleviated with over-the-counter pain reliever and the application of cold compresses.

That being said, there are still a few more serious symptoms you should look out for if you’re getting BOTOX injections. These include:

  • Pain or swelling at the site of the BOTOX injection.
  • Superficial skin reddening or discoloration at the injection site.
  • Dry or watery eyes.
  • Flulike symptoms (fever, chills, body aches).
  • Headaches.
  • Drooping eyelids.
  • Cockeyed eyebrows.
  • Drooling, or a crooked smile.

In most cases, these symptoms will clear up within a few days of receiving your injections, but this will vary from person to person. However, it is still important to notify your dentist or doctor if you get them regardless of their severity. If you are experiencing any serious or life-threatening symptoms, call 911 immediately.

While these symptoms are incredibly rare, it is also important to note that your risk of developing them is greatly reduced when you use a skilled injector such as a dentist or oral surgeon.  While it may be tempting to try and lower costs by visiting an underqualified cosmetologist or aesthetician, the risk is truly not worth any potential savings.

Remember, BOTOX is a safe, effective way to temporarily reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in the face. Most injections last between three and six months, and with repeated use could help slow the progression of new wrinkles from developing over time. While very rare, it is still possible that you may experience some minor side effects with BOTOX, but in most cases, these will clear up on their own within a week or so.  Still, for your own peace of mind, if you ever have any questions or concerns following your treatment, don’t hesitate to contact your surgeon and they’ll be happy to help!
